SKILLS & INTERESTS

I am a big believer in holistically fuelling your body by engaging in different kinds of activities and hobbies outside of academics. I’m involved in running my university’s taekwondo society, having attained my black belt when I was 14, and continuing to practice martial arts every week. To stay active, I also enjoy swimming and playing badminton with friends. Additionally, I play the drums, something I find I enjoy as a way to release stress and play the songs I love. I also really like drawing and painting, and although I don’t consider myself talented at either, I enjoy the process and find it a fun way to express emotions and have fun. I am also a fan of languages, speaking both English and Hindi (my native language) fluently, and in the process of learning Cantonese and Mandarin.

WORK EXPERIENCE

• Student academic representative for the LSE100 course at my university, liaising between staff department and a batch of 30 students

• Volunteer at Smart Works London, helping women from diverse backgrounds build confidence and secure meaningful employment

• Head of Model United Nations Club at my school, trained over 50 students and organised both educational and social sessions

PERSONAL STATEMENT

My initial exposure to tutoring came from needing tuition in Mandarin after struggling in that class for months as a primary school student. I will always remember my tutor, a new graduate herself, as someone who changed my perception of my abilitiesand my whole approach to learning. Alongside teaching me vocabulary and correct grammar, my tutor also taught me a passion for learning by embedding the language into my life outside of class, listening to local podcasts and music, and making the process of learning more relevant to my life and thus more enjoyable. Now, as a tutor, I strive to help my students reach that same point where learning becomes something fun rather than a chore.

Born in India and educated in Hong Kong before coming to the UK for university, I have experience with a wide range of teaching curriculums and styles. My own education consisted of the IB and the IGCSE programs, allowing me to learn a wide range of subjects and transferable skills that I still use at university today. I am currently studying sociology at the London School of Economics, an environment which I believe has rapidly built on my passion for education, for both learning and teaching skills and knowledge for the benefit of my students, myself, and others. Furthermore, I am immersed in a dynamic learning environment and surrounded every day with students who have the same passion for education and knowledge that I do, exposing me to a multitude of opinions and learning styles, making me more aware of the need to adapt to different study preferences and styles when tutoring to help a student achieve their full potential.

I firmly believe that learning in school, whether that is to attain good grades or to learn new skills, is often not related to a student’s inherent ability and more related to interest, motivation, and confidence. All these things, I believe, can be influenced by a tutor who pays the right kind of attention to individual students and helps them figure out what study method works best for them, and what kind of push they need to be able to work independently and no longer need a tutor. I consider my biggest successes as a tutor to be when I am no longer needed because my student has learnt to achieve the same result on their own. This is why I believe in the one-to-one tutoring model, which allows me to tailor concept explanations, tasks and advice to the way a student’s brain will best absorb it. This allows them to gradually get to the point where they are interested in the subject matter and can understand it and arrive at the same place independently.

As a young adult and current student, I believe I am in a good position to teach different kinds of things – not simply going through the syllabus, but also building a bond with students in order to teach them life skills and a passion for learning, something I think can only be taught via a personal connection and empathy for a student’s specific situation and way of learning. I’m able to both relate to a child’s stress and understandable worry about exams, having been through it recently myself, but also able to provide perspective and help them build up the interest and confidence that will help them improve in exams and in other areas of academic life. By wholly tailoring my lesson plans to my students’ confidence and stage in their studies, as well as building in reflection and discussion, I aim to encourage students to take charge of their own learning and to provide a comfortable and secure environment where they can develop their own interests.
