PERSONAL STATEMENT

I started tutoring during my gap year where I tutored several GCSE subjects online. As someone who was passionate about my subjects, I wanted a role where I could share the enjoyment of my subjects with other students. I quickly realised the importance of study skills and a student’s mindset and approach to studying in academic success. I am now passionate about helping students develop in their subjects but importantly, equipping them with the skills to study independently and efficiently and achieve academic success without having to compromise on their wellbeing or other commitments. This led me to design engaging and motivating sessions for students during the pandemic, despite lessons having to take place online.

In addition, I am passionate about helping students access university. During my gap year, my friend and I started a community organisation (‘The RoK Network’) after reflecting on our experiences applying to university. As part of this, we designed an 8-month ‘UniPrep’ programme with a group of 29 volunteers, with a monthly workshop on different topics on the application process such as ‘Writing personal statements’ and ‘Preparing for medicine interviews.’ Witnessing the participants progress from choosing universities to getting offers from university as part of the programme was an incredibly rewarding moment for myself and my team members. Alongside this,  I am also a Pathways to Law mentor at my university. As a previous Pathways to law participant, I enjoy being able to work on the other side as a mentor, sharing my experiences of university with prospective students and leading sessions to guide them on the practical aspects of making a university application such as writing a good personal statement. Being a student ambassador at my university also allows me to help widen and realise prospective students’ ambitions. My experience mentoring young people in different capacities provides me with skills that I can bring to this role, especially for students aiming to apply to university.

Having worked in programmes like NCS which are geared towards young people, I have experience being an encouraging voice, and this coupled with my tutoring experience and passion for my subjects would be of great use in this role.
