PERSONAL STATEMENT

To me, a tutor’s power and fulfilment is found in a student’s own passion, to be a guide on their very personal journey through the winding, non-linear path of education. I am lucky enough to have experienced both sides of this relationship, now bringing long-term experience with refreshed approaches to my students:

I started my own tutoring ventures as a teenager, working my way through word-of-mouth all the way into my university years. I learned to listen, respond, and adapt to my students across a wide spectrum of academic needs, finding best results by mixing my expertise with friendly energy. My fondest memory is of a Saturday school student, a very lively, funny yet ‘disruptive’ young man who just “didn’t really like English”; after a few jokes and some conversation, I transmuted his assignments into analogous questions on his own interests in football, ran through them with success, then finished with instant completion of his assignment… no questions asked!

This example sticks with me today after my own experiences.

I’d found academia natural in younger ages, excelling by coasting through until A-Levels hit me like a train; resits, missed deadlines, setbacks, all plagued my early adulthood, even when pursuing my love of literature in my English BA. However, after a lot of self-reflection, a very late ADHD diagnosis, hard work, and - most importantly - acceptance of external support, I’ve found a successful path through my graduation and into the next chapter. I am now completely in love with my subject, excited by research, able to merge productivity with enjoyment in all areas of life - all because I worked with those who took the time to understand me.

It would be my greatest pleasure be that guide for your child, share my methods and learnings, and help them find joy their own way!
