PERSONAL STATEMENT

I always had an interest in taking care and teaching children, but the moment I fell in love with teaching and tutoring was my voluntary experience as a teaching assistant at Chicken Soup Foundation based in Hong Kong. I enjoyed how I was able to build a positive relationship with children while assisting them with their homework and tests at the same time. It is a privilege to be able to play a role in their growth and development, and I take that responsibility seriously. Through tutoring, I am able to create a safe and supportive learning environment where children can feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and growing from those experiences. I was able to develop a positive rapport with the children I primarily worked with while watching them excel at their academics. I found it extremely rewarding to help children who are struggling with their homework and support their knowledge construction.

My previous work experience at learning centres in Hong Kong has given me the opportunity to work with children of all abilities, age groups and different personalities. These experiences were incredibly precious to me not only because it was my first teaching post but also the fact that it has shaped how I would like to teach children. I love instilling positivity within children and motivating children to keep trying. This is an important trait that children should have to face pressure and unforeseen events.

Having a good experience in education meant that I was able to develop a love for teaching topics, which as Mathematics. I wish to transfer what I know to my tutees to help them excel and gain confidence in the subjects they fear. Being able to help my tutees grow confidence in what they presume is their weakest subject brings a lot of satisfaction to my role as a tutor, but also as a ‘friend’ of my tutees. I love interacting with children because of their different personalities, and it means how we build our relationship will also be unique. Every child is different, and every tutoring session presents a new challenge. In addition to the satisfaction that comes with helping children succeed, tutoring also allows me to learn continually and grow as an individual. I have to be adaptable and flexible in my teaching style to meet each child's individual needs. This keeps me on my toes and helps me become a better teacher, communicator, and problem-solver.

I believe I am an enthusiastic and open-minded teacher who is able to make learning stimulating and fun for students of all abilities whilst focusing on their progress. My learning plans are individualised for students’ particular needs, assist children of all capabilities and watch them improve not academically and also in resilience. As I have just finished my PGCE Primary course, I am familiar with the UK curriculum and expectations on SATs and 11+ exams. My students and I would reflect on the work we have done and skills to build on, and look into examination and revision techniques to equip children best to achieve the best of their abilities.
