PERSONAL STATEMENT

When I moved to the UK at the age of thirteen, there were many changes happening in my life but one of the few areas that stayed consistent was education. This meant that I enjoyed going to school as I was always looking forward to applying what I already knew and also learning new subjects. As a student, I was able to learn that different learning approaches work differently for everyone and finding the ones that worked best for me allowed me to continue my love for education and counteract the challenges I faced in some subjects. Overtime, I have been able to learn what learning methods work best for me, where my interests lie and even go through five different career aspirations until I landed on the one I enjoy the most, which is finance. I enjoy tutoring because I am able to support students to discover and/or grow their love for education whilst supporting them in learning approaches what work best for them, just like I did.

During my time as a student myself, I have been able to learn that one method does not work for everyone and I have been able to apply this currently, and in my previous tutoring role. I want to be able to support students improve their confidence in education as although they may find some subjects challenging, the issue is not their ability but their interest that is being hindered. Outside of the classroom, with one-to-one tutoring, I am able to support students with tailored learning that is centered around how the student prefers to work. I have previously worked as a private tutor helping two students prepare for their SATs and also guiding them through their first two years of secondary school. I had to take different approaches when tutoring both students as different methods worked for them, but I made sure to help them both understand the importance of spaced repetition and active recall. Spaced repetition is a memory technique that involves reviewing and recalling information at intervals until the information is learned at a sufficient level. Active recall involves repeated testing of learning materials either through self-developed questions or using flashcards. These methods used together helped my students improve their long-term memory recall whilst avoiding reliance on cramming hence why they achieved high grades in their SATs. They also had an easier transition and adjustment into secondary school education as we continued using these methods in application to the different subjects they started learning. Alongside this, we also focused on doing past papers and end of topic tests. We also worked together to weigh the pros and cons of different exam techniques and study methods to find personalised learning methods for each student in order to facilitate their success in their education.

As a tutor, I find teaching others to be a rewarding experience because I enjoy guiding students, helping them learn new information and achieve their goals. Additionally, having personally experienced growing from being less motivated in some subjects to gaining an interest in them after trying different study techniques, I am able to support students with applying the knowledge of what I did differently so they can be successful in their education journey.
