SKILLS & INTERESTS

I started playing football from the age of 6 and have never looked back. I’ve had the opportunity to go abroad by being selected to play in tournaments in Germany and the USA as an adolescent. I am now playing recreationally, and I am channelling my passion for the sport by studying for diplomas in coaching and football analysis.

I’ve also played chess from a young age. Although I stopped playing chess competitively (my rating peaked as a 14 year old), I still love to have a game with anyone.

As someone who grew up in a bilingual environment (English and Greek), I have always been fascinated by languages. I have A*s in both Mandarin and French GCSE, and I am currently learning Italian.

WORK EXPERIENCE

I worked part-time for an Ed-Tech company aiming to provide virtual classroom aid to teachers and pupils at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. I sold the company’s product to schools across the world and helped on-boarding customers on to the platform.

In my second year of university, I was re-hired by the company in a full-time role as their revenue operations analyst

PERSONAL STATEMENT

I was born and brought up in North London and was fortunate enough to be awarded the John Venn Maths Scholarship in Highgate School, so I have got ample first-hand experience of the secondary schools culture in the area and of the demands of competitive exams at different stages (from 11+ to A-levels). Two of the closest people in my life, who both worked in education, have been instrumental in developing a passion for teaching. My late grandmother who was a teacher to primary school students in a secluded village in the Pelopponesian mountains (in Greece) helped me forge an interest in Maths from a young age. She taught me fractions and decimals. On the other end of the teaching spectrum is my mother, who is Professor of Sociolinguistics at King’s College London. She taught me the importance of higher education in broadening our horizons. Tutoring is a great way to teach others a subject which is my passion, that might not be theirs. Having grown up bilingually and with a working knowledge of another three languages, I am sensitised to the different cultural backgrounds that people bring to learning, alongside their individual learning styles and needs. Given the nature of Maths as a subject, a focal part of my teaching will be to identify any gaps in the foundations of the subject and first focus on tackling these. Another important issue for me is the relatability of a subject that can come across as too abstract and too technical. Have you ever thought why we are even learning this? Well, with each topic, I will motivate the reason for learning it with a tangible, real-world example. In this way, I will be helping my students visualise concepts that might be abstract to them. Above all, I want to help students overcome any fears around Maths and enjoy the subject. I believe that connecting students with the fun aspects of Maths, the joy of problem-solving, is what helps get them the grades they want and deserve.
