PERSONAL STATEMENT

I have both formal and informal tutoring experience. At college I tutored Year 12 students in A-Level Psychology and Sociology across a full academic year, the students came in with really different starting points, and a few went on to achieve A*s. More recently I've been volunteering at the Baytree Centre in Brixton, a community centre for women and girls, where I've been mentoring for a full academic year. I've worked one-to-one with two girls at quite different stages. I work with an 11-year-old, supporting her with spelling and basic maths. Then I also work with a 14-year-old which I've been helping her through GCSE Maths and science, focusing on higher papers and more ambitious questions. My teaching style is really centred around the student rather than the content. I create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and developing their own understanding. Importantly, the goal is not to give answers, but to guide students towards them, helping them develop the skills and strategies they can eventually use on their own. I think this comes partly from my own experience within education, the teachers that stick with you weren’t the ones that just gave you the answer but actually gave you the confidence to get there yourself. For my interest in Sociology and Psychology, I love how both subjects challenge assumptions, they take things you think you already understand about people and the world, and show you there's so much more underneath. This underpins my reason for my Sociology degree at LSE. For me, studying sociology and psychology genuinely changed how I see things. It gave me a framework for understanding why people behave the way they do, how their experiences and environment shape them in ways that aren't always visible. I think most importantly it's made me a lot more empathetic, rather than taking people at face value. The opportunity to teach this is something I am really dedicated towards Through Love Learning, I am looking to tutor Psychology and Sociology at GCSE, AS and A-Level, as well as supporting younger students with 11+ preparation.
