Focus Assessment
We are so pleased to announce that we have teamed up with the Focus Academy to offer clients the focus assessment as part of our onboarding process.
The findings will inform how we can better cater the lesson to each student.
What can we learn from the focus assessment?
Consistency - how much of the time your child isn't concentrating?
Does the student start their homework by themselves?
Can the student work without supervision?
Does the student struggle to start a task; does the student interrupt the work session to drink water or fetch something?
Can they repeat the work the next day without making errors?
Is the quality of work consistent?
Is the student’s handwriting neat the one day and messy the next?
Typically putting work off until later or making mistakes resulting in having to repeat or rectify mistakes / Procrastination?
Performance – how fast does my child process new content?
Does the student behave like a daydreamer? Stares out in front of them without noticing the surroundings?
Can the student do at least three consecutive orders, or do they lose track?
Is the student able to keep up with schoolwork, or is it expected that they must stay behind to catch up? Do they struggle with keeping up with peers?
Does homework take a long time to complete?
How good are the students’ listening skills?
Does the student struggle to complete verbal and non-verbal tasks?
Impulsivity - how often does your child answer without thinking?
Does the student act with haste?
Does the student play roughly without thinking of the consequences?
Does the student rush through their work and make careless mistakes?
Can they wait their turn?
Does the student read through questions, or do they leave out essential parts of the question?
Do they speedily scan rather than read instructions properly?
Does the student interrupt others in conversation?
Distractions - what type of environment would help your child stay focused?
We are influenced by distractions to a degree, but some cannot perform when distracted. Even a teacher that just walks around when teaching might distract some students. When we cannot filter out distractions, we struggle to stay on task.
Is the student impacted or affected by Auditory distractors? – (i.e. loud noises, hand dryers, children moving about, noises outside etc.) or Visual distractors – movement such as a bird flying past a window, the busy walls in classrooms, etc. and to what extent these distractions impact their ability to remain focused.
The assessment is not indicative of what is ‘wrong’ with the student but rather which areas can be improved upon and also to understand certain behaviours that you may see as a parent or their teacher or tutor.
Why should your child even do this test?
Two things we'll be able to assess:
We will be able to see your child's behaviours and how much attention they are likely to be paying throughout that lesson
If they are affected by what is going around them and to what extent it impacts them.
What does the FOCUS Assessment involve?
This assessment will give us an objective measurement of where the student is functioning against others of the same age.
The Focus assessment is an objective scientific measurement of a person’s ability to stay focused. We base our opinions on what the student puts into the computer and the corresponding report. The software measures the student against a norm group of a similar age and gender. The Focus Assessment aims to highlight areas of improvement rather than be used negatively.
