SKILLS AND INTERESTS

Languages have always been a very big part of my life, and I’ve found learning and speaking them a great source of joy. French was my second language, Spanish my third, before finally going on to study Arabic and Catalan at Durham University. In addition to languages, however, I have always had a keen interest in the theatre — eventually going on to study this in practice at Masters’ level.

I find that almost all of my hobbies and interests are underpinned in some way by these first two passions, whether it is my love of cinema, video-games, literature, art, music, and singing.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

I spent my formative years in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire, making the most of the opportunities offered to me and developing both my academic and extra-curricular skills to their fullest. In addition to being a dedicated and passionate student, I pursued theatrical interests that allowed me to gain invaluable creative experience. These dual passions led me to Durham University, which gave me the opportunity to simultaneously pursue academic and extra-curricular passions in a particularly unique manner. I can count among my accolades a strong academic record, receiving a First Class (Hons.) Bachelor of Arts Degree in Modern Languages & Cultures, and a mark of 84 on my dissertation; also various accomplishments in student theatre. During my Year Abroad, I was able to attend a world-class theatre school in Barcelona, and have recently graduated from my M.A. at one of the world's leading theatre conservatoires, Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.

Over the course of my own education, I have discovered my own interest in teaching, which eventually led me to private coaching and tutoring. Having spent several years as a dance teacher and teaching assistant, I built on my fundamental teaching skills in working as an independent ESL teacher during my time abroad in Barcelona as part of my B.A. Modern Languages & Cultures at the University of Durham, working with private clients in a range of professions. Since then, I have tutored and coached individual clients in a variety of disciplines, ranging from vocal coaching, individual languages, and academic subjects. I have had the privilege, over the course of my time in tutoring thus far, to see my students’ confidence grow and allow them to achieve feats that they would never have expected from themselves just a year, or even a few months, prior.  

Having been in education of the course of the last ten years, I find that the key to success within academic work is a matter of confidence and enjoyment, when a student is receiving the tailored and specific learning support that they need. Encouraging students to find joy within the work that they are doing is always at the centre of my practice as a tutor, and has equally served me well over the duration of my academic career. I find great joy in the creative, explorative, and innovative work of finding unique ways to approach academia that suit the individual at the centre of the education, rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach. For me, this means finding different approaches and ways of thinking to get the most out of the students’ own innate ability, and ultimately produce the best results that the can when it comes to examinations and assessments.
