PERSONAL STATEMENT

I first started tutoring when a fifteen-year-old girl was sent to me by my Maths teacher. In a class too big to have the proper attention to her learning, she started struggling and came to hate the subject. The way the teacher was explaining concepts wasn’t the right way for her and so she turned to me for help. At the start I tried different approaches but her unwillingness to learn made it very hard. However, after a couple of weeks, she started finding things easier and showing real progress. She went form being predicted a D to attaining a B. And that is the great thing about tutoring, you get tailor your teaching to the students needs greatly increasing the efficiency of the learning.

Having recently finished the school system myself, I can connect with the students in a way a teacher could not, knowing full well their feelings and anxieties. Having also gone through many schools and two different school systems (English and Spanish) allowed me to experience a wide range of teaching styles, which I have been able to incorporate into my tutoring. I also know how much a teacher can make or break a subject for a student, having experienced both incredible and not so good teachers. One thing which separated the two was their passion for teaching and the subject being taught. When a teacher is passionate that passion is transmitted to the student itself. That is my objective now, to share my passion for these subjects and equip them with the adequate skills so that students can achieve their potential and go on to do the things they really want but couldn’t because of insufficient grades.

At the start I always try to get to know my student, their passions, their worries, their objectives and find some common interests, which in turn allows me to better adapt my lessons to the students need. My philosophy? Learning through practical questions. Being an engineering student, I do not believe in heavy studying from a book, although, I do understand the need for it in certain situations. The way which has worked best for me is to learn by practicing questions and repetition. It is also the best way for me, my student, and their parents to assess their progress. At the end of every session the student will attempt a question and judging from their approach and their overall attainment we will both be able to identify areas which need improving and will be able to adapt my teaching to what they need. It is also a method which the student will be able to implement on their own outside of our lessons in order to achieve their true potential.
